Since wars begin in the minds of men,
it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.

UNESCO WEEK ON EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
(8-14 November 2010)

Can mobility in urban and extra-urban areas be coherent with environmental protection, health and quality of life? Which is the contribution expected from public transport policies and urban planning tools? Which kind of research should be developed by the car industry? Is it really possible to promote alternative patterns of mobility?

Taking into account these and other issues, the Italian UNESCO Week on Education for Sustainable Development 2010 will take place from 8 to 14 November 2010 and will focus on the theme Mobility.

Under the coordination of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, hundreds of organisations will participate in the Week and organise a wide range of different events: meetings, exhibitions, games, shows, practical demonstrations, and workshops, among others.

The initiative is aimed at spreading knowledge and skills about new ways of making use of public spaces as well as understanding how to satisfy mobility demand without compromising human health and vital resources.

Pollution, ecological vehicles, pedestrian areas, urban tolls, participatory democracy, consumption models, touristic flows, food miles: these are only some of the issues that will be faced during the UNESCO Week in order to find answers and innovative solutions for sustainable, equitable and modern societies.

The events may take place in any Italian region: all local actors involved in education and culture for sustainability, including schools, universities, public institutions, cultural actors, NGOs, etc. are invited to join the Week and promote initiatives to be included in the national program.

The Week on Education for Sustainable Development is organised every year in the framework of the DESD (Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005 – 2014), a global campaign coordinated by UNESCO in order to promote the respect for common goods, future generations and planet’s resources.

Previous National Weeks were focused on the themes Energy (2006), Climate Change (2007), Waste Recycling and Reduction (2008), Cities and Citizenship (2009) and have shown an extraordinary and growing success in terms of interest, participation and awareness raising. The annual theme and the guiding principles are defined by the "National DESD Committee", which is composed by the main national organisations engaged in promoting the "sustainability culture": around 120 partners.
